Born and raised in Zimbabwe, with B.Comm (Natal, South Africa), and B.A. Honours in Economics (Capetown), Clive Southey completed his Phd. (Univ.of British Columbia, 1969) specializing in Natural Resources and in Development Economics. Most of his published work is theoretical (micro-economics), but after two years in Kenya as a Senior Advisor to the Government in the Long-Range Planning Unit, he acquired a strong interest in applied issues of development and the environment.

His work has been published in journals including the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Economic Journal, Ecological Economics, and Canadian Journal of Economics.
